Many of Derrick Riley's richly envisioned woodcut prints illustrate news events and popular stories - sometimes called urban myths - that circulate around his adopted home state of Kentucky and Appalachia. The prints are purposefully humorous, and serve to keenly skewer popular culture, societal fables and human foibles.

In addition to some very large prints, many over 7 feet in width, he Crary Art Gallery show features a new series of 15 works which Mr. Riley has been developing for three years, shown pieced together as one continuous image. This exhibition marks their premier unveiling.
Mr. Riley is the professor of printmaking at Asbury College in addition to teaching at the University of Kentucky. His work has been exhibited widely and is in collections such as those of Rutgers University, Boston College, and the College of Notre Dame. An art documentary featuring him and his work, filmed by Kentucky Educational Television, won several national and international awards.
